Improving the way the BBC plans News stories
Defining strategy with research
I worked with Change Managers to understand the business goals and inform the strategy with findings from user research.
Through ethnographic research I identified users pain points and used a system thinking approach to understand how many teams decisions and tasks affect each other.
Working with editorial staff from Editors, to Production Coordinators as well as Technical Architests and Data Scientists I identified opportunities to improve the planning process. We identified key decision points staff face where audience and production data could help them make more informed choices.
Making the information about what was being planned more transparent and providing the means for better collaboration within editorial tools allowed teams to find a more efficent way of working.
Testing new workflows involved getting a shared view from a variety of different users and discussing them as a group.
Suggesting improvements & seeding ideas
The system is complex and it's hard to know how improvements should be made, but to get a seat at the table where these decisions are being made we found that coming up with an improved vision of how the newsroom could collaborate together gave us a voice and seeded conversations around user needs.
